What is a yeast infection?

A vaginal yeast infection occurs when naturally occurring fungus in the vagina exceeds the normal level.

The name of the fungus is Candida Albicans and it is a naturally occurring fungus in the human body that will in certain conditions cause problems like yeast infections when too much of it is present.

Sometimes birth control medication can increase the possibility of developing a yeast infection. This is not usually a cause but sometimes is often seen as a trigger.  Talk to your medical professional if you suspect this and move to the type of birth control that does not enable yeast infections.

Apple Cider Vinegar treatment for yeast Infection

The most common and best way to get rid of a yeast infection with apple cider vinegar is to take a nice relaxing bath in a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water.

The fungus or yeast is unable to live in an acidic environment which is what you make when you put a good quantity into your bath.

The good thing is that research has found there is little negative side effects and apple cider vinegar has been found to be very effective on the various candida bacteria. [REF]

How do you use Tea Tree Oil for yeast infections?

Tea tree essential oil again is one of my all time favorites for its antibacterial and antifungal properties.

So it is no surprise that it is a recommended remedy that may help to clear up or prevent yeast infections.

How do you get rid of a yeast infection in one day?

Many of my readers say they have used this method.

tea tree oil for yeast infection

The good thing about Tea tree oil is that it oftens helps alleviate symptoms of a yeast infection by reducing pain and inflammation.

Vaginal suppositories containing tea tree oil have been proved to treat vaginal fungal infections. [REF]

Can you put tea tree oil in your vag?

Some women report relief from adding diluted tea tree oil to a tampon and inserting this into the vagina overnight.

However, please be really careful and use extreme caution when using tea tree oil ( it also needs to be diluted with a carrier oil), as it can irritate the skin, and the vaginal walls are particularly sensitive.

Also NOTE Tea tree is an essential oil and, and needs to be mixed with a carrier oil. A common recipe is to use 3-5 drops of tea tree oil in 1 ounce of warmed coconut oil and then soakit in a tampon. It is important to change the tampon regularly.

Also, people can be allergic to tea tree oil. Test the diluted oil on an area the size of a penny on the forearm or inner thigh first.

Researchers have found tea tree oil was effective on more than 15 different candida strains (REF).

Probiotic supplements for yeast infections

Certain probiotic supplements can offer a natural solution to a yeast infection.

Some brands of probiotic supplements sell specially formulated products for female reproductive health. These aim to restore the balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina. Certain research suggests that the probiotic lactobacilli can increase the effectiveness of antifungal medications being taken by women with vaginal yeast infection.

Can Coconut oil cure yeast infection

Coconut oil has been proven to have antifungal properties and has been shown to combat the Candida albicans yeast.

Raw organic coconut oil can be applied internally or externally to ease symptoms.

Warmed coconut oil can also be used as a carrier oil for more powerful antifungal essential oils, including tea tree oil or oil of oregano.

Some coconut oil may be specifically suited for cooking, rather than for use on skin, so compare products and brands to choose an appropriate product.

I like this one for a carrier oil.

Preventative Methods for Yeast Infections

One of the ways you can manage future yeast infections is adding to your diet some healthy options that can inhibit the growth of bacteria that can cause yeast infections

Greek Yogurt

This is a natural probiotic that contains healthy bacteria that helps to take care of your gut or stomach. Yogurt is known to contain a bacteria known as Lactobacillus acidophilus and that helps to prevent the growth of infectious diseases. A study found that these healthy bacteria can inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause yeast infections.[REF]

Garlic Cloves

Garlic for hundreds of years has been known as almost a superfood when it comes to boosting the immune system and it is also said to be an effective treatment against certain types of candida that cause yeast infections. [REF]

How to Prevent Yeast Infections

There many things you can do to minimize the chance of yeast infections becoming a problem.

Prevent yeast Infections with Cotton breathable Underwear

Cotton underwear does help prevent bacteria from starting. You certainly want to avoid underwear that is satin or made from other materials that do not breath. Particularly good are underwear made from bamboo, hemp or merino wool.

Do not get tight underwear. This helps to prevent harmful bacteria from becoming trapped and then entering the vagina.

It also helps to wear loose clothing.

To prevent yeast infections do not wear tight jeans either as yeast thrives in warm moist conditions.

Stop Douching

Limiting the use of douches can help as some douches will eliminate good bacteria that protect your vagina from infections.

Other points to note:

After workouts and exercise change your underwear.  For yeast to grow it requires an environment that is wet and warm.

So pack an extra pair of underwear before you go to the gym.

Shower well after exercise, walking, biking or after the gym or whatever your sport is.

Also dry your genital area well after swimming or workouts in the gym.  I specifically recommend these small microfiber towels - used gently they do a great job of drying well and then can be put in a plastic bag and washed later.

Last advice for preventing a yeast infection:

Eat Healthy

As with most ailments, eating a healthy diet can help to prevent infections and illness. Limit your sugar intake as sugar can promote the growth of yeast bacteria. Make sure your diet consists of a blend of vegetables, healthy fats, and protein.

You can help rebalance the good gut bacteria in your system by regularly eating fermented foods, which naturally contain probiotics. Here’s a few to try:

  • Unsweetened coconut yogurt
  • Apple cider vinegar (raw, unpasteurized, and with “the mother”)
  • Kimchi
  • Organic unsweetened kefir
  • Tempeh
  • Organic unsweetened yogurt

Important With any health concerns, it’s best to talk to a qualified healthcare practitioner before incorporating any natural remedies into a treatment plan. Please seek medical advice before starting new treatments.

One last point - by adopting a health lifestyle - a good diet with some exercise will really help your body’s chances of fighting bacteria with home remedies for a yeast infection.

The great thing also is they will most likely help you feel better overall
