How Does a Food Dehydrator Work
Modern food dehydrators are plastic or metal containers designed to dry foods by passing hot air through them. When you are dehydrating vegetables or fruit for snacks the hot air removes the moisture creating a crispy apple chip say. Without the moisture or water the micro organism that normally grow - can not.
This means your snacks can last longer if you store them in airtight ziplock bags.

Quite simply put - the best rated food dehydrator is the Nesco Snackmaster Pro:
Nesco Snackmaster Pro FD-75A Review
Hamilton Beach 32100A
As a mid range food dehydrator this is our favourite.
It has a square design that makes it easy to store. The Hamilton Beach 32100A has a mesh sheet for making homemade fruit rolls. This mesh sheet can also be used to dry garden herbs.
Being a digital model, the unit has its own timer (48 hr) and an automatic shut off.
It has an adjustable temperature range (100-160F)
It also comes with 5 stackable trays and a solid sheet for fruit leather
Excalibur 3926TCDB 9-Tray Electric Food Dehydrator
We found the Excalibur to be the best all-around dehydrator if you want a bit more size. It is more expensive but the steep price is matched by the vast amount of tray space.
The 3926TB produces excellent results in terms of texture, evenness, and flavor.
For example, making fruit leathers in our Excalibur is easy, and allows me to preserve almost every type of fruit. The vast amount of tray space means food purchased in bulk, in season can be used to produce low priced healthy snacks.
It can handle the widest range of food with beef jerky, vegetables, and fruit all being dried perfectly.
Horizontal Airflow for even drying
Powerful 600 watts power
Adjustable thermostat (95 to 165 degrees Fahrenheit)
9 trays (15 square feet of drying space)
No need to rotate the trays
Tray height is adjustable- ideal for larger items
Made in the USA with a limited 10 year warranty
Other benefits - the nine trays slide easily into place inside the dehydrator, and are very easy to wash. This layout has several benefits. If food falls through the trays (or drips before dry), it falls on the bottom of the dehydrator, and not into the motor. Also, the trays don’t stack, but slide into their own tracks. This means you can remove some of the trays allowing for larger items to be placed into the machine, Great!
