We tested a whole range of apples in our Kitchen - Here are the best apples for dehydrating that we found.

  • Pink Lady

A nice apple between sweet and tart. It will retain its shape well - which means you can use them in salad or baking.  I would just eat these ones straight away (after they cool down) - they are my favourite.
  • Granny Smith

Granny smith apples hold up well - they can be a bit tart - but are great for baking and cooking with. Remember - what makes them one of the  best apples for dehydrating is their flavor which intensifies when dehydrated.
  • Mutsu

Also known as Crispin, this firm-fleshed apple is less tart. This is a good choice
  • Honeycrisp

This is a great apple with a crisp texture and will hold firm almost no matter how long you dehydrate them - this makes them versatile.
  • Braeburn

This superbly crisp apples have a concentrated taste. They are also lovely when sprinkled with real grated cinnamon.

Peel the apple skin

Utilizing a vegetable peeler or a knife. There are numerous methods to do this. You can utilize an apple corer which is without a doubt the simplest technique.

Another easy method to core an apple is to slice it in half from top to bottom and use a melon baller to dig the center part.

Then carefully slice the apple into thin chips about 1/8th of an inch thick. If you have a mandoline slicer that is the best way to do this as all the chips will be evenly sliced which creates a better result.

PRO TIP     Squeeze some lemon juice, coating each apple piece prior to you placing it on the baking sheet. It will stop the browning.

Pre-heat your oven to 200-220 F degrees.

Set your timer for one hour. If the side of your apple chips that faces up is dry, flip each chip over (sprinkle with cinnamon to taste if you like).

Return to the oven for another hour. You can leave the apple chips in the oven for another 1 or 2 hours after you turn it off.

But do check every hour the first time you make these to check they are not over dry.

They are light and simple to carry in a bag as a mid-afternoon treat, or as an addition to a kid's lunchbox. They are low in calories and fat.

Let them cool first

Keeping them in a dry space (I keep mine in the fridge) and in an airtight storage container, or a Ziploc bag will ensure they stay crispy for 3-5 days.
