To make Sullivan look bigger and heavier, he has to wear a prosthetic costume throughout the show. That revelation received thousand of backlash from its viewers. It was after Susan Kelechi Watson revealed that Chris Sullivan wears prosthetics to play Toby on the said show.

“The fact that Toby wears a fat suit is sooooooo disappointing.”

But Chris immediately acted on the controversy regarding defending his “fake” weight on the movie saying that he was very proud of the work he has done as Toby and was very pleased to have a personal conversation with fans regarding it.
“You know, there are different requirements for an actor for different roles,” he told People Now. “And I think that if people actually had a problem with the way that I was representing this character, or had a problem with the integrity of the character, or the way I was treating this character, then I would really like to have a conversation … I’m very proud of the work that I’ve done as Toby.”
In another interview back in 2017, Sullivan further said, “I can understand why people feel fooled by things they see on TV… I feel like we’re currently living in a culture where the outrage is a bit of a hobby for some people, and, if they’re not outraged about something, they’re totally bored,” he added.
On the other hand, the role of Chris Sullivan in This Is Us was not merely about being overweight and being in a weight loss support group, it was also about the struggle of having depression. And it was something that he has in common since he personally has gone through it in real life.
When asked about how Chris feels towards his character, he simply said, “I was really excited, actually, because the idea that any person or character is one thing is just not true. People have their upsides and downsides, their dark and bright moments…”
When asked about what he needs to change to get through the character of Toby, this was his answer:
“No, I kind of always knew what Toby was going through. I’ve certainly gone through my fair share of anxiety and depression.” He added, “When you’re in the good moments, you’re just experiencing the good moments. Until the writers let me know there’s going to be something different going on, I don’t really have to ship anything onto a bigger scale for him. It’s all part of the same process.”
Throughout three seasons of This Is Us, Toby (Chris Suvillan) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) have transitioned into being parents of baby Jack after Toby’s fights depression and Kate’s infertility struggles.
